 The formation of the Congress was not an accidental event, nor was there any particular reason for its birth. All those reasons are responsible for the establishment of Congress, due to which the national consciousness emerged in India. If the Congress had not been established, some other such institution would have taken the place of the Congress, because many reasons had arisen for this. chief among them were (1) Social and Religious Movements -  Many social and religious movements took place in India in the 18th and 19th centuries. They had a huge impact on the Indian people. Indians began to consider their country's civilization and culture to be better than the western civilization and culture. These movements were mainly (i) Brahmo Samaj - Raja Rammohan Roy was the founder of 'Brahma Samaj'.  कांग्रेस की गठन होना कोई आकस्मिक घटना नहीं थी और न ही इसके जन्म का कोई एक विशेष कारण था। कांग्रेस की स्थापना के लिए वे सब कारण उत्तरदायी हैं जिनके कारण भारत में राष्ट्रीय चेतना का उदय हुआ। यदि कांग्रेस का स्थापना न होता तो कोई और ऐसी संस्था कांग्रेस का स्थान ले लेती, क्योंकि इसके लिए अनेक कारण उत्पन्न हो चुके थे। इनमें प्रमुख थे (1) सामाजिक एवं धार्मिक आन्दोलन -  18वीं और 19वीं शताब्दी में भारत में बहुत से सामाजिक और धार्मिक आन्दोलन हुए। भारतीय जनता पर इनका व्यापक प्रभाव पड़ा। भारतीय अपने देश की सभ्यता व संस्कृति को पाश्चात्य सभ्यता व संस्कृति की तुलना में श्रेष्ठ समझने लगे। ये आन्दोलन प्रमुख रूप से निम्न थे (i) ब्रह्म समाज - 'ब्रह्म समाज' के संस्थापक राजा राममोहन राय थे। 1828 ई. में इसकी स्थापना कर राजा राममोहन राय ने सामाजिक एवं धार्मिक कुरीतियों को दूर करने के लिए आन्दोलन चलाए। (ii) आर्य समाज- 'आर्य समाज' की स्थापना स्वामी दयानन्द सरस्वती ने 1875 ई. में की थी। उन्होंने भी सामाजिक एवं धार्मिक कुरीतियों को दूर करने के लिए महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रयास किए। दयानन्द पहले भारतीय थ...
